Our Library Friend and the Power of Community
January 21, 2025
While we love seeing the familiar faces of our staff every day, there’s something extra special about welcoming members of our broader community into our nursing home. One of those cherished visitors is Kim, from Clermont County Library. Kim stops by once a month to bring fresh crafting ideas to our residents, and her visits have become a highlight of our activity calendar. The library’s program is a free community service designed for nursing homes, offering a variety of activities that enrich the lives of our residents.
Kim has become more than a visitor—she’s a wonderful friend to our residents, who light up when she walks through the door. Her kindness and creativity leave a lasting impact. As Martha, one of our residents, puts it,
“Kim always has great ideas and projects. I try to make sure I’m there each month. She’s so nice and really helpful!” Each month, Kim tailors her crafts to the season or upcoming events. For example, her most recent visit focused on New Year’s-themed crafts, and it brought joy to both our ladies and a few gentlemen who love getting creative.
Having community partnerships like this is profoundly meaningful for our residents. It’s more than just an activity; it’s a reminder that they are valued, connected, and capable. Engaging with people from the outside community shows our residents that being in a care facility doesn’t mean life stops or that they are forgotten. Instead, it highlights their continued ability to build relationships, form friendships, and contribute to meaningful projects.
Kim’s visits are just one example of the many ways our community supports us.
We’re also blessed to have partnerships with St. Columban Catholic Church, Cornerstone Church, and other “angels” in our area who enrich the lives of our residents. These relationships remind everyone that needing help is not a weakness; it’s part of being human. And just because someone requires care doesn’t mean they can’t still influence and participate in the world around them.
Crafting is a favorite activity here at Florentine, with biweekly sessions every other Thursday evening. Kim’s monthly visits add an extra spark of excitement. Residents always wonder what new project they’ll work on together, and they’re thrilled when the day arrives. Kim has a unique way of making everyone feel included and equal, treating each resident with kindness and respect.
Daily activities like crafting are crucial for our residents. For some, it’s about socializing and connecting with others. For others, it’s the sense of accomplishment and purpose that comes with completing a project. Regardless of the reason, these activities foster a sense of togetherness and joy. As a staff member, knowing I’ve helped make their day brighter is the most rewarding part of my job. I want my residents to feel loved, needed, and valued. I want them to know they are seen, heard, and appreciated.
One of my favorite memories of community involvement was when we partnered with our kitchen staff one Christmas to serve food to the homeless. Our residents set up and served meals, and the experience left them feeling empowered and needed. They talked about it for months afterward, proud of their ability to give back. That’s what activities are all about. Nursing heals the body, but activities heal the mind and spirit.
Programs like the one Kim brings from the library help our residents rediscover their independence and feel a sense of normalcy. Being part of the community, even in small ways, adds to their quality of life and gives them a purpose beyond their day-to-day routine. We’re always looking for more volunteers—family members, friends, high school students, and other community members are all welcome. Their involvement makes our residents feel connected, important, and like true peers with those outside our facility.
At the heart of everything we do is the belief that life doesn’t stop because of where you live. With the help of our community friends like Kim, we’re able to ensure our residents feel empowered, included, and loved every single day at Florentine Gardens.
