Therapy Success Story - Donna
October 23, 2024
When Donna Wahlert was admitted to Florentine Gardens, she had just undergone major heart surgery that left her unable to use her arms for most tasks. At 77 years young (as she proudly shares), Donna was no longer able to stand or complete daily activities independently. Initially skeptical of the therapy team—whom she affectionately referred to as "the small girls," doubting their ability to help due to her 6-foot-tall frame—Donna’s determination and growing trust in the team helped her adapt.
Despite the strict sternal precautions she had to follow and chronic knee pain, Donna learned how to manage daily activities, from getting out of bed to showering on her own. Although she faced a setback when she was re-admitted to the hospital, Donna’s resilience shone through. Once her restrictions were lifted and her knee treated, Donna made tremendous progress. She proudly walked further than she had during her entire stay and began participating in activities, especially enjoying getting her nails done—a new experience she plans to continue at home!
Both Donna and her family are thrilled with her progress. Donna feels happier, having learned to prioritize her health and well-being. Reflecting on her experience, she says,
"The biggest surprise was the personal connection. No one ever felt like a stranger. I wouldn’t be where I am without the therapy department; I really felt like I achieved something!"
We are incredibly proud of Donna's hard work and success. By the end of her stay, she confidently walked out of the nursing home and returned to her own home, independently.
